Not sure on the legalities but I would think that all factory fitted lights would need to operate and lenses not to emit a colour other than its purpose (otherwords a red light with a broken or faded lenses showing a white light through the fault).
So one could think, ok totally remove the light and not just block it.
In that case you would need to check with the ADR (Australian Design Rule) on what is the regulation on brake lights for that year model.
I know I haven't answered your question! Best thing would be to speak to the person who does your Pink Slip and he/she would have the right information on that one.

Hi Hugo
As an old Motor Registry Manager I can advise that if the third light was factory fitted, it would be illegal to block it as the light would be required to operate under the Australian Design Rules..........however after market models are available from Supercheap and Repco and if you fitted on of these in an area where it can be seen, it would then be legal......Steve S

I found this link for you a Ugo.

www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2006L02300

According to it, even the ones that display a decal with word PTCruiser over the light is illegal.
After reading all the requirements I think I would be concerned fitting retro tail lights (unless the package states it meets the ADR).
It talks about size, light emittance, angle of light emmittance and colour.
