Hello,

Looking for some help. Over the past year my PT Cruiser has lost power while driving a few times. First time it was just the instrument panel that went, next couple it was complete loss of power. Roadside assistance came but by the time they got to me (which was only 20 min) the car started fine. One time was doing 110 on the motorway. I have taken her to 3 mechanics and an auto electrician and nobody can find the cause. Alternator has been checked over and over. Looking to see if anyone else has had similar problems and what they found to be the cause. Or, if anyone has had an engine replaced and what they would recommend. I don’t want a different car, I just need this one to be safe and reliable - esp when carting around 3 kids. Seeking advice please. Thank you!
Ps. Based in Canberra and still looking for a PT enthusiastic mechanic.

Hi Emgh
Not sure what to make of yours I'm!
I'm a retired Mechanic and when you get an intermittent issue they are hard to diagnose.
Easy to find if it does it while working on it.
Any way let's hope someone may be able to help with an idea.
Can't say I have heard of anyone with that similar issue on hear.
Also no body has registered any recommended mechanics in the ACT.
The only thing I can suggest is contact A&J Automotive at Blacktown (Western Sydney) or Allan at Bleam Chrysler Chrome up at Qld.
Both have a good knowledge of the Cruisers.

Sounds like it might be the ignition switch.
An easy change.

Thank you Ray and Electric Wombat,
I appreciate the response. I will ask my regular mechanic about the ignition switch and I will also have a look at the recommended places you have suggested.
Thank you both!

Is it a later model?(05 -10)
TPM could be an issue, Transmission Power Module
It houses most of the relays, which are not replaceable, but can be bypassed by a decent auto electrician
A decent auto electrician should be able to test them first.
No such thing as a PT enthusiastic mechanic, you may find one that tolerates them.
To buy a replacement motor, several thousand dollars, thats before installing.
Welcome to the money pit.

Hi, yep it is a 2006 model. I will talk with the auto electrician. That’s where it went last but this wasn’t discussed at all so I will definitely mention it.

Thanks for the advice on the replacement motor. I had thought it would be expensive but so is taking the car in to a mechanic every few weeks because it’s playing up. Engine light is on - again. :(

I could be in the money pit with any car really, may as well be one I really like. Thank you!
