And to update this post again (if anybody ever bothers to do a search these days)-
I had a "stick in a bucket" experience whilst in western Sydney last weekend-
managed to get home with the use of part of a wall anchor, key tag and cable ties!
The culprit was the bush at the shifter end of the right hand (drivers side) cable (still the original!).
Found my last remaining booger replacement and all fixed.

I had seen somewhere that people were having trouble finding them these days-
