Disconnect the positive and negative cables from the battery.
Then connect the two cables together, use of a jumper lead will help to join the two together.
DO NOT LET THE TERMINALS TOUCH THE BATTERY TERMINALS.
Hold them together for 2 minutes, then reconnect as normal to the battery.

Is it essential to have the 2 terminals connected - Ptmunji.

Absolutely essential.
They need to be joined to drain the residual power from the ECU.
If you don't have a jumper lead try a wire coat hanger.

I'd be inclined to drain off residuals with a light globe instead of a dead short. Even though the battery is totally disconnected first, At least the power has somewhere to go/dissipate instead of back thru the sensitive system.

Just an idea.
